Paper Thin Night Vision

Night Vision, if you’re a Man you have at least once wanted to have a pair of night vision goggles. Until that is you saw the hefty price tag and cumbersome head gear, fear not as Night Vision is about to get a radical redesign thanks to the technology behind flat screen TV’s. Franky So, a scientist at the University of Florida describes his new night vision technology in a recent article in the journal Advanced Materials “This device can convert any infrared image into a visible image and would weigh no more than a pair of eyeglasses,”.

The new material is made from seven layers of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) and as the light passes through each layer they get excited by the infrared spectrum of light this generates an electrical charge that get’s amplified by the next layer, turning total darkness into clarity.

It’s a very interesting idea, and an enormous improvement as far as size goes. But efficiency will need to improve a bit before this hits the market. The paper says the infrared light needs to be 37 times more intense than the green light you want to get out and that the device requires 15 volts to do even this.
