The OMC Pick of FridayTrailer’s June 18, 2010

The pick from FridayTrailers.com this week kicks it into over drive with the third movie for the Resident Evil series looking like it is going to kick some serious arse. If you haven’t seen the first two crawl out from under your iLetdown iPad and Netflix them now because if you like your action with a touch of virally mutated zombies, a dash of action packing hotties and presented on a nice combination of sleek technological and bleak apocalyptic back drops then Resident Evil: Afterlife is the menu item for you. Hot Women, Guns, Explosions, Planes, Lasers (there might be lasers) Zombies, Mutated Zombies and evil corporations getting the sh*t kicked out of them, whats not to like in this film.

In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the Undead, Alice, continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety.

I’m thoroughly disappointed with the Resident Evil franchise nas a whole – had so much potential but i think they screwed it up big time.

The RE games are so rich with in depth history of the T-Virus, characters, places, they also have a great story to tell, which is linked(albeit loosely) from game to game.

They should have cast Milla Jovovich as Jill Valentine instead of creating a new character all together. So lame. Then introducing element from other games but linking it all back to Alice – even lamer. IT defeats the purpose – Nemesis has a reason for attacking S.T.A.R.S team members – this meaning was lost because the writers a bunch of douchers.

Minimising the role of Jill Valentine takes the whole story away from the movie, making just another zombie flick. they killed a major character off screen in a freakin’ newspaper headline in the second movie. Leon S. Kennedy is a major player in ther series and even headlined not one but TWO games (RE:2 and RE:4).

I hate the fact that everytime they have some kind of cameo of an element from the game that its so corny, and is almost as if we should be grateful of the writers, when in reality the movies are shit and they only good bits are those corny shoutouts to a series of games spanning 14 years, 11 games (plus 2 gamecube remakes) 9 consoles and 40 million copies sold.

The writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson didn’t like the idea of “adapting” the games for fear of doing it wrong, so instead he wrote the movies to contain only elements of the games stating “Anderson stated the film would not include any tie-ins with the video game series as “under-performing movie tie-ins are too common and Resident Evil, of all games, deserved a good celluloid representation”” – from Wikipedia

Funny that he mentions that such an awesome game deserves to be represented so well but then makes so few references to the content in the games.

Chris Redfield another major character from the first game, referenced in the second, third and fourth games and also the main character of RE:5 is not shown until this fourth movie.

Honestly beyond the first movie, which had faults but totally watchable – this sucession of sequels is a content-less emotion-less cash cow.

    I’m gutted.
