OMC Movie Review: Moon

With Iron Man 2 opening a few months ago now, we saw a return to the big screen for actor Sam Rockwell as smug, capitalist Justin Hammer. To date, Iron Man 2 has accumulated over $212 million in the US alone, a large leap higher than Rockwell’s last release: 2009’s multi award winning “Moon”.

The Plot

(IMDB): With only three weeks left in his three year contract, Sam Bell is getting anxious to finally return to Earth. He is the only occupant of a Moon-based manufacturing facility along with his computer and assistant, GERTY. The long period of time alone however has resulted in him talking to himself for the most part, or to his plants. Direct communication with Earth is not possible due to a long-standing communication malfunction but he does get an occasional message from his wife Tess. When he has an accident however, he wakens to find that he is not alone.

The Pro’s

The isolation and loneliness is conveyed very well, due in large part to Sam Rockwell’s amazing performance. Without a doubt, this is his film; there are no diversions or distractions – a task I’d imagine would be a heavy weight for the less talented. In another actor’s hands, it could have become over the top or cartoonish, but Sam remains understated in the critical moments.

The Con’s

There are obvious comparisons that can be made between this and movies of the same tone and genre, but on the whole there really isn’t anything that I found dislikable.

The Round up

A must see. The combination of story, directing, and performance make Moon unique; and that’s a rare thing to say that in these times of sequels and reboots.

Saw this movie and it blew my mind! The fact that it was a smaller budget Scifi film and it still knocked it out of the park just proves that the smaller production houses can still do a damn good job as the big studios!

Also, welcome Dani! Glad to have you here!

I enjoyed it but it ofcourse made me wonder what the hell the goverment and big business is really capable and willing to do to get the almighty dollar.
