ThinkGeek Manly Product of the Month: Black Ops Throat Mic

We’ve all seen that guy walking around talking to himself wearing a Bluetooth headset and instantly thought to ourselves “what a tool”. Sadly most of us at one time or another may have to wear a headset while on the phone, when driving due to state law for example, and therefore at some point we have had one of those “tool” moments. Luckily, our friends over at ThinkGeek.com have seen the light and come up with a bad ass headset alternative.

Allow me to introduce you to the Black Ops Throat Mic, What is a Throat Mic you say? Glad you asked! A Throat Mic hugs your neck and picks up sound directly from your vocal cords. This allows for two main features. You can whisper and still be heard clearly on the other end and the person you’re speaking to hears no outside sound, only your voice. Therefore a throat mic based headset is perfect to use in any noisy environment… like while laying down mortar rounds, or cruising in your convertible.

While its listed as an “iPhone” headset make no mistake it works perfectly with any smart-phone or phone equipped with a 3.5mm jack, my HTC Evo 4G for example (not available in Australia, suck it Simon). Because it is a wired headset there is no Bluetooth BS, no batteries to charge, and no devices to pair.

Having actually used this headset I can tell you that you will look about as bad-ass as they come and due to its unique look its an excellent conversation starter. It did take some getting used to at first as you can feel like you are being choked, but as you adjust the straps and get used to it that feeling goes away. The sound quality from the ear bud is nice and clear and after the initial first few adjustments to the throat mic to get it sitting right it works as advertised. It did make my throat a little itchy at first but that was due to the fact that the mic uses the vibrations of your vocal chords to pick up the sound so it actually made sense and let me know the mic was on correctly.

The Black Ops Throat Mic retails for $119.99 which puts it in a pricey category compared to other headsets out there. But for all of you Call of Duty: Black Ops fans this would go a long way to making you look as bad ass as your online counterpart. Realistically speaking this headset would be perfect for someone who works in a noisy environment, drives a convertible, or rides a motorcycle. You can pick yours up at ThinkGeek.Com.

Does it also work to stream music from a smart-phone?

Like, could I listen to anything out the phone on the earpiece?

  2. Sergio says:

yes Kai it can stream music from your smartphone, I wouldn’t exactly call it practical for it though. The one ear listening kinda gives you that mono feeling.

worked with other phones? As the nokia c3-01

because I like to buy it and would be a waste of money if it not working

    Hey Sergio,

I’ve been looking at this mic ever since it launched on Thinkgeek. You answered the question about whether or not it works with other smartphones/other phones with 3.5mm jack which is something I’m sure almost all of us have been wondering. But I was wondering if you knew whether or not this would work through a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter. What makes this ideal besides badass aesthetics is it would go good with my Casio Ravine.

Any heads up would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,

    -Nico

Will it work on a GZ-one Commando?

I found the manufacturer. If anyone wants to skim their sites for a US retailer I found one a few months ago. Just throwing that bit of info out there.
